within us a heart-desire that cannot

summoned by God for service takes
root within us, we finally speak our
“yes” as Mary did, at first haltingly,
but over time that yes becomes the
defining quality of our very person. In his own personal journal
published under the title Markings,
former U.N. Secretary General Dag
Hammarskjöld described this process well: “I don’t know Who—or
what—put the question, I don’t
know when it was put. I don’t even
remember answering. But at some
moment I did answer yes to Someone—or Something—and from that
hour I was certain that existence is
meaningful and that, therefore, my
life, in self-surrender, had a goal.
