7. How are religious orders
different from one another?
Each religious order or congregationhas a charism—a gift given for theservice of the church. Their charismmay be to teach, pray, or heal, forexample. It helps them accomplishthe community’s mission and focustheir ministries.
Many congregations are like-minded or have similar ministries, but each is distinct in one respect oranother. Sometimes it may just be amatter of geography. Many groupsof religious men and women werefounded for similar purposes and atthe same time but in different places.
Religious communities formed
to meet specific needs of the times,
whether it be to serve the sick
during the Plague, educate children
in frontier territories, or pray for
the conversion of hardened hearts.
New communities continue to be
formed today in response to God
calling men and women to particular
forms of spirituality, community, and
mission.
8. How long does it take
to become a priest?
Generally it takes four years of college, followed by five to six moreyears of seminary study. A seminaryis a college or university run by aCatholic diocese or religious community for educating and preparing men to be diocesan or religiouspriests, respectively.
Because we’vechosen a way of lifethat says God is mostimportant, prayer iscentral to our lives. Our relationshipwith God grows anddeepens with prayer.
