RELIGIOUS SIGHTINGS
SISTER María José proves once and for all that she’s still got game,” says americamagazine.org about Sister María JoséCorrea, who was a world-class pole-vaulterrepresenting her native Chile before shebecame a sister. She joined Servants of thePlan of God, a new religious order dedicated to evangelization, service, and solidaritywith the poor.
But her path to the convent was hardlytypical. She excelled at pole vaultingenough to represent Chile in South American championships and at a World Cup.
After meeting some sisters, she started tovolunteer with the elderly. She explains ina video by americamagazine.org that polevaulting opened the path for her to “jumphigh—but not for me, to jump high to heaven with others.” She now worksin campus ministry at Arizona State University. “Having sisters that have mysame heart, that understand me deeply—you know, the experiences that Ihave, the joys, the suffering—is something that is really, really a treasure forme,” she says.
