BROTHER RAY MORRIS, B.H.
Brother Ray Morris’ ministry at Florida State University can seemlike play. “Basically I walk around campus playing sports andsharing meals with students,” he says. But don’t be fooled. Thepoint, he says, is “building relationships and (hopefully) leadingthem closer to God. It’s fun at times and disheartening at othersbut always worthwhile.” He loves working alongside his brothersto reach out to students in part because he was once spirituallyadrift himself.
Did you have a
dream for your life
Like many kids, I dreamedof doing something great, something heroic. At some pointthough, that dream died. Instead,I became content with makinga decent amount of money andjust carving out a comfortablelife for myself.
How did you meet
I met members of Brotherhoodof Hope through a desk job I hadat the Catholic Center while astudent at Rutgers University. Atthat point in my life I wasn’t evengoing to Mass. I was searching forhappiness in all the places thisworld tells you to look, and likethe Prodigal Son, I eventually became fed up. I decided to try going back to church instead of justworking at one. “If I don’t like it, Ican just stop,” I told myself. About10 years later, I’m still here!
What did your
family and friends
think about you
becoming a brother?
My family never activelypracticed our faith growingup, so they were polite butsuspicious. Over time, theybegan to see the fruits of it in mylife and in others. Now they’repretty supportive.
What do you do for fun?I love to read (classics especially),run, and relax with the bros!
Your favorite way
Sitting in silence and beholdingmy Beloved Master as he beholdsme. Many times my prayer isdistracted and I have a hard timeeven staying awake! So I reallytreasure those rare times whenI can sit with my whole heart, mind, and soul fixed on God.
